Need I remind you how badly Vegeta got beaten by Majin Buu, despite having a stronger Super Saiyan 2 due to the Majin charm? Sure Goku was buying time, but he WOULD have gotten his ass beat by Buu if he wasn't a Super Saiyan 3. Super Saiyan 3 was necessary for Goku to use in its Z appearances. I definitely agree with the whole design philosophy, but the rest. Somehow trigger the Oozaru transformation The only requirements that seem to exist for it are:ģ. Lastly, "Super Saiyan 4" is a hybrid that doesn't require Super Saiyan 3 to accomplish (hell it can be argued that you can skip Super Saiyan 2 as well to achieve it). This being when he was controlled by Baby, as "Super Baby Vegeta 2", but he was never seen to be using it again. It is worth noting that technically Vegeta has used Super Saiyan 3 in GT, but he wasn't really in control at the time. When it comes to GT, it's a completely seperate continuity that causes completely seperate confusions (one of my favorites is that some people think Gohan has "Mystic Super Saiyan"). Perhaps there's a mental block that has stopped him, but now there is no need for him to obtain it with the addition of Super Saiyan Blue (and his own spin on it). Not only has he never stated/hinted that, he would know that he could overcome that limitation and that even with the limitation a serious user has plenty of time to defeat the opponent with it. One of the theories used for why he doesn't have it is that "it causes too much strain so he doesn't want it" is bullocks. When it comes to Super Saiyan 3, Vegeta could probably obtain it under the right circumstances and simply hasn't for whatever reason. Lightning is just another way to show that someone has immense power, even Nappa has been engulfed in it for an attack before. Furthermore lightning isn't a distinguishing factor, regardless of what people want to believe. It's simply harder to tell due to his hair style to begin with, as he doesn't have any bangs and his hair naturally sticks up. Vegeta used Super Saiyan 2 throughout most of the Buu saga for combat. A SSJ2 way above all other SSJ2 characters? This is where I started believing that power levels are more character specific and transformations are even more relevant to a character's base level than initially thought. Oh, and in DBS ToP, things got even more confusing with the addition of Kefla. In escence, this also happened to Trunks in the Zamasu arc. But again, I suppose the writers didn't know much of the character. Seriously, he just wanted to bar fight Beerus at that one time. That would have been a small chance to see a SSJ3 Vegeta if only out of pure anger and disregard for things like stamina.

We all should know what happens when a saiyan is really angry. But I suppose that was the writers not knowing enough about the character.Īnother bump is when Beerus hits Bulma and Vegeta, knowing who he was about to fight, angrily powered up. Sure, he fell for it again when he used Blue out of the time in the Universe 6 arc. He knows that stamina heavy transformations can cost him a fight much faster than fighting for longer in a more efficient form. I feel Vegeta learned from his time at the Cell saga to never use non efficient transformations like buffed SSJ (ascended was it?). The only thing that really got any use out of SS3 was Dragon Ball Heroes and that was more due to the more fan servicey nature of that game which did things like giving SS3 to Trunks SS4 Gohan, etc, etc. When you think about the fact that Goku only uses the form to buy time against Buu, that it did nothing against Beerus, made short work of Janemba's first form but was useless against his second form, or that it took Hirudegarn out in one shot, you start to realize how pointless and/or under used the form is to the point that you wonder why it ever existed in the first place, so it's not surprising that other characters like Vegeta didn't achieve the form. There wasn't a ton of variety in Toriyama's faces to begin with but giving everybody the same browless eyes and long hair for a form wasn't such a great design decision. Not to mention design wise it allows for basically no variation in character appearances/faces.

In retrospect SS3 seems to be one of the more pointless transformations to come out of the series given how it never really accomplished anything and is/was rarely used.
